Pack 32 and Pack 43 team up to place flags in local cemetery

Scouts place flags at graves of Santa Clara's veterans

 

Santa Clara, CA, May 28, 2011 – As part of local remembrance events for Memorial Day, Cub Scouts from Santa Clara's Packs 32 and 43, along with Boy Scout Troop 394 fanned out across the Santa Clara Mission Cemetery to mark the graves of our local veterans buried there with an American Flag.

 

“Placing flags at the graves of these American heros is the least we can do”, stated Rob Morse, Cubmaster of Pack 32. “It is important to teach our children there is a cost associated with the freedoms we enjoy.  There is a cost of war not counted in dollars, borne by the families left behind, that can never be repaid.  By placing these flags we honor not just the service member, but their family as well.” 

 

A total of 30 Scouts and their families participated in the flag placing.  Scouts upon finding the marker of a service member, placed an American Flag, stepped back, and saluted paying tribute to that Veteran.  Hundereds of flags were placed throughout the cemetery at the graves of members of all branches of service dating back to soldiers in the American Civil War.

 

The Cub Scouts returned at the end of the Memorial Day Weekend to collect the flags so they could be used again next year.

 

The annual Memorial Day Flag Placing is one of the many community and educational activities the Cub Scouts participate in. Additional activities include Scouting for Food, Veteran’s Day Parade, Creek Clean ups, Camping, and an annual Pinewood Derby.
